**1999: Human suffering. Part 1.** In the summer of 1999, Finni was not doing very well emotionally. His parents had separated a few months earlier, so the family situation was tense. Finni's voluntary work, which had given him so much strength and a great social network over the last four years, came to an end when he finished school. His professional future was uncertain, as he felt he was an artist but didn't know if and how he could earn money with it. His summer job was very demanding, working over 12 hours a day, every day of the week. But the worst thing was that he had fallen in love with one of his best friends again, but Eric (= not my friend Eric at NC) couldn't reciprocate this love.


**Part 2.** In a conversation, Finni's mother revealed to him that she was very sorry that she had never given him a real musical instrument. Finni had always been given very generous presents as a child, but while almost all his other wishes were fulfilled, he never got a real musical instrument, even though he always wanted one. Finni's mother believed that Finni - like his older brothers - would not use the musical instrument. Only once, in 1994, did he get a very small keyboard, which was actually for small children. Finni's mother said at the time that she had deliberately bought him such a cheap keyboard: if she saw that he actually played it, she would get him a real keyboard. However, the device had such a bad, beepy sound and such small keys that the then 15-year-old Finni was unable to realize his dreams.

**Part 3.** By now, in 1999, Finni's mother had often seen that Finni took his creative projects seriously and was very productive. She was familiar with some of his short films, mini-series, music videos, short stories, poems and (sung) songs. She also noticed that Finni was always looking for musical instruments on his own initiative: in 1996, Finni spent his savings on an electric guitar. Friends lent him a keyboard and a bass for a longer period in 1996 and 1997. However, Finni realized that he loved stringed instruments but was not good at playing them. With the borrowed keyboard, however, he recorded his first melodies in 1996, which he used to set some of his film projects to music. With these experiences in mind, Finni's mother apologized in 1999 for not recognizing his musical talents. To his surprise, she offered to buy him a synthesizer.
