The Ronin

A Ronin is a samurai without a master in feudal Japan. The term “ronin” literally means “wave man,” symbolizing someone who is adrift or without a steady position. Ronin became masterless for various reasons: their lord may have died, their clan could have been abolished, or they may have been disgraced and dismissed.

Without a master to serve, ronin were often seen as drifters or outcasts in Japanese society. They were free to wander and could offer their services as mercenaries, bodyguards, or adventurers. While some ronin retained their honor and continued to live by the samurai code (bushido), others turned to banditry or other less reputable means to survive. The image of the ronin has been romanticized in literature, film, and popular culture, often depicted as a lone warrior seeking redemption or revenge.
