Awesome work. I'm learning a great deal from your travelogues/history lessons. I don't really know anything about the history of Jamaica. Who are the Maroons? What did the treaty settle? Did it last?

Thanks a lot! The Maroons were Africans who escaped slavery and built free communities in Jamaica’s mountains. The 1739 treaty gave them land and freedom, but it also required them to return runaway enslaved people — which caused tensions later. Conflicts over land and British control flared up again in the 1790s, though the Maroons’ legacy of independence still lives on today.🫶🙏

Were the French involved at some point, or was this an entirely British occupation? So, I'm going to guess the Imperialists were on the verge of losing control altogether, in so far as they were willing to negotiate with escaped slaves. I wonder if that deal was the blueprint for the southern US states Fugitive Slave Act?

After the Treaties: Resettlement and Continuity

Following the 1739 Maroon Treaty, Nanny guided her community to settle in Moore Town, Eastern Jamaica. The Maroons retained autonomy, self-governance, and their ancestral rituals, ensuring the survival of a distinct culture rooted in freedom and resistance.
