Graphite

WOAH! The art style is so cool, it reminds me of some illustrations of books I used to have as a youngster. So beautiful and intricate. It makes me sad when I see my friend’s children’s books, because everything is cartoony and simple. Along with the lore, this is really quite an exquisite piece of art. Also, anyone who knows anything about Kami is incredible. It’s the first religion we studied in my Eastern Religions class, and I suppose I’ll always have a soft spot in my heart for both the religion and the art (so intricately woven in so many eastern cultures). 

*So much* of Japanese culture and lore is profoundly beautiful.  I could easily slip into the country hills for a couple of years and not return or bring anything electronic with me.

This was a new stretch in my explorations with Graphite.  I'm in that kind of mood this past week.  If you'd like to try it, here's the formula:

I’ve seen Graphite get used in some wildly creative ways. It’s fantastic. This fox breathes life. The tightness of the details in the fur, juxtaposed by the looseness of the washes in the background. It’s just lovely. 

Japanese folklore and religious mythology is rife with anthropomorphic and deified creatures. The kitsune (fox) recurs throughout stories in Japanese history, usually appearing as an intelligent and/or cunning being with paranormal abilities and often residing at Shinto shrines.

The kitsune are portrayed as having a deep connection with their human companions and as manifestations of a major kami (Shinto spirt) in the Japanese story of creation.

Kitsune have been a part of Japanese religious culture for as long as the culture has existed in any meaningful sense. Long before Japan came under imperial rule, it was populated by nomadic tribes whose spirit worlds were fueled by deeply held polytheistic animist beliefs.

The love and support you all show me and my art blows me away and fills my heart with such warm joy and pride in my abilities! With an auto-immune disease that keeps me from being able to do alot more exciting things like others can more safely do AND a crippling anxiety disorder that keeps me from enjoying life as much as I should be able to, life was and is hard, like I know it is for everyone.
