The Yule Lads are said to be the sons of the mountain trolls Grýla and Leppalúði. Each of the thirteen Yule Lads has a distinct personality and name, such as Stekkjarstaur (Sheep-Cote Clod), Giljagaur (Gully Gawk), Stúfur (Stubby), and Bjúgnakrækir (Sausage Swiper). Their names often reflect their mischievous behavior or the tricks they like to play.
