All ʻahu ʻula cloaks were made from feathers of native Hawaiian birds which were considered sacred. The feathers were painstakingly attached to a backing of barkcloth, using a technique called kapa.

The ʻahu ʻula were worn by Hawaiian royalty on special occasions, such as weddings, funerals, and religious ceremonies. They were also worn as symbols of power and authority. Some cloaks were believed to have magical powers and therefore were worn by Hawaiian chiefs in battle to protect them from harm.

The few cloaks that survive today are considered national treasures.
