“I can,” Helena replied. “I’ll be your discalced Calced Carmelite.”
“Say what?” exclaimed Tyra.

“It’s a little joke amongst my order. In the 1500’s there was a Carmelite nun, Teresa of Avila, who helped reform the Order. As an outward symbol of her reform, she and her followers did not wear shoes. They became known as the Discalced Carmelites, and eventually they broke away from my Order, which became known as the Ancient Observance, or as a bit of a joke, the Calced Carmelites,” Helena explained as she sat and took off her boots and socks. Tyra didn’t totally understand the joke but nodded to be polite. Once Helena was ready, she let Tyra know.
