Opal Lara paused, the candlelight reflecting off the cake’s dark frosting. The guests were late, unusually so. She glanced at the clock—or where it should be. It was gone. Just another empty space on the wall, like the one beside the mirror. A chill snaked up her spine despite the warmth of the room. The pumpkins seemed to grin wider than before, and a spiderweb shimmered with an unnatural light. She hoped they hadn't forgotten. Or worse... that something had stopped them from arriving. The skull on the cake felt heavier now, its empty sockets staring back at her. A single glass of champagne sat untouched beside the table setting.
