Steamship Sultana

A week, maybe two, after Lincoln was murdered, an overboarded, undermaintained Mississippi River steamship carrying Union p.o.w.s from Andersonville and other atrocious prison camps , blew its stack resulting in a profound loss of life. The Sultana was supposed to be carrying fewer than 500 souls. That night, it carried over 2100... To this day, it is said, an explosion followed by shrill screams are sometimes heard, if you are near the river in that fateful spot. And the truly unlucky, or "gifted" might see the Sultana herself, in flames, floating down the mighty Mississippi, men jumping overboard into the cold and treacherous river.
