Augustine Spotlight: Michael “Mikey”Benedict

The oldest of Ezekiel’s grandchildren.

Micheal or as his sister calls him “Mikey” has an important role in the story. Being the overprotective brother that is already trying to take the place of their grandfather as the de facto patriarch of the family. His grandfather respects this and admires Micheal’s decision. While Alex is indifferent and Amanda rebels against him.

He as the oldest remembers the time he spent outside of Augustine, but has no desire to leave the island as he agrees with his grandfather’s decision. This is partly due to the hole his parents left in his heart.

Micheal is a surprisingly good climber, and towards the end of the story he serves a major role in assisting Nigel Wright in climbing Augustine mountain and descending into the ravine inside the Whispering Taiga.

He apologizes to his siblings and makes it right with his sister, and they remain a close family. He is not a good cook, and vents about this to anyone that will listen.
