Eye of the Cataclysm

In this age of apocalypse, when the true nature of techno-metaphysics has been revealed to a new generation of zealous believers, pilgrims come from around the Barren Lands to give their tribute to the Eye of the Cataclysm, as one of the Gateways to the Underworld.

Those most pious are chosen for tribute, and walk calmly into the gaping maw of the Eye. Their foul, imperfect bodies are purified by flame and consumed, leaving only their souls to pass into the eternal furnace of light.

And their bodies supplement the vestigial petroleum fuels the machines need to prolong their holy reign on this dying planet.
