“I’ll be right there, Izzy. Helena out.” Several minutes later Helena arrived in the Engine Room. Fairbairn had spread a poncho on the deck. She had prepared her MRE and was mixing a cup of bug juice with water from her canteen. She motioned for Helena to sit down. The Carmelite prepared her MRE, some bug juice, and after saying grace, she and Fairbairn began to eat.

For a while they ate in companionable silence, Then Fairbairn spoke.

“Sister Helena, what is it like to be a Carmelite nun? Do you pray all day long?” the Scot asked.


“We have scheduled times for Prayer throughout the day. But we do work in order to support ourselves and to follow a Precept of our Rule. Our monastery makes coffee, tea, and greeting cards. We have some free time, and I tend to walk around the Monastery grounds. We all come together for meals and at least once or twice a day for an hour in what we call Recreation. We share letters from home, work on crafts and talk amongst ourselves. Our day is in my mind is a lot like life in the Air Force,” Helena explained. 

“Do you miss that life, Sister?” Fairbairn asked.

“A little,” Helena replied. “But after seven years in formation and six years after taking my vows, I am content with my life in Carmel. 
Though I must admit, I’m still figuring out what God's plans are for me on this SG team.”

“I’m sure you’ll figure that out over time, Sister. How are you holding up so far?”

“I’m holding up alright. Though...” 
Helena became sad.

“Helena, what’s wrong?” Fairbairn asked with a tone and look of concern for her teammate. “Is it your nightmares again? ... Is it something with Colonel Larkin?”

Helena sighed very hard and began to cry. “Izzy, if I tell you this, can you keep it in confidence?” she asked.

“Of course,” Fairbairn replied. “Your secret is safe with me. You have my word.”

“Alright... when I was with the Rogue NID, my cell attacked an SG team that was trying to bring us in.”

“I see,” Fairbairn affirmed. “Go on.”

“One of the people trying to bring me in was the Colonel’s brother, Patrick.” Helena began to sob.

“What happened to Patrick?” Fairbairn asked.

“I... killed... him!” Helena cried and sobbed. The weight was partially off her shoulders.


Fairbairn grabbed her comms from her tactical vest. “Helena, come in,” she said.

“I’m here, Izzy,” Helena replied.

“How are you coming with the hangar door?” 

“Not well I’m afraid. You?”

“Nothing promising here either. It’s 1400. Do you want to stop for lunch?”

“That sounds good to me,” The Carmelite replied, “I could use a break.”

“Join me in the engine room. It won’t exactly be a picnic, per se, but we’ll make it work,” Fairbairn said.

Helena laughed. “It will be fine, Izzy. Perhaps when things quiet down, we can have a real picnic somewhere here. With the Colonel's permission of course.”

“But of course,” Fairbairn replied.

That's hilarious. I've had that happen a  couple of times. No bueno. My first night in the homeless shelter when I became homeless at 23, I got a bad migraine, I'd been crying a lot, all of my art in my old art pads had gotten soaked with orange juice from the foil-top OJ cup I brought from the hospital breaking in my travel bag, ruining decades of artwork, I was scared, and I woke up paralyzed in the bottom bunk bed, scared as Hell. Then while struggling to get out of it the room started flashing red because of the fire alarm going off and that took me out of it. I'm standing out in the dark shaking still traumatized to find out it was a drill, but COME ON!
