Boyd was largely self-taught and began painting at a young age. Boyd's work is characterised by its emotional intensity, rich colour palette, and complex layering of themes and symbols. His "figurative Impressionist" and often allegorical works explored a range of themes, including love, religion, social injustice, and the Australian landscape. Boyd was a member of the Antipodeans, a group of Melbourne-based painters who opposed the dominance of abstract expressionism.
