In 2025, brilliant researchers make a breakthrough in the fight against climate change: a genetically modified self-pollinating flower: sylphidiflora leucantha or sylphid for laymen. It was designed to balance CO2 in the atmosphere and be resistant to both herbicides and pesticides. Leaders tout it as the greatest achievement of mankind.
Governments and corporations pour money into the project, and soon bankroll a massive project to plant vast areas with it globally. By 2035, 200,000 square kilometers are planted with sylphid: larger than the land area of Syria.
