**1994: Overnight stays**
*January 1994*

**Part 1.** “Mom?” Finni drew out the vowel so long that probably every mother in the world would have known that a big request was coming. Finni was embarrassed by the intonation, as at 14 he no longer felt like a child. “Yes?” replied Elisabeth. Now the actual question had to come, but Finni feared the answer.

Steve and Luke had been Finni's best friends for five months now, Danny even longer. The four boys sat together at school. They met every Friday and sometimes on other days too. They were wonderful moments, but Finni suffered every time he couldn't stay with his friends longer. [You can read the story here:]

Finni's longing for his friends was made worse by the fact that Finni was secretly in love with Danny.

During the winter holidays of 1993/94, Danny was on vacation while Finni stayed at home. Finni missed Danny from the very first day. So he was all the more delighted when the phone rang and he suddenly heard Danny's voice. “We have a phone in the vacation apartment!” Danny had said. “The vacation is so boring! So I thought I'd give you a call.” Finni was happy and they talked on the phone for hours. The next day too. And the day after that, and eventually phone calls became the norm, even after Danny came back from vacation. 

“Our son can move in with you, Finni!” Danny's father had said jokingly. Danny and Finni had looked at each other sheepishly, but with a grin that said, “Yes, we belong together.”

Of course, Danny couldn't move in with Finni.

**Part 3.** But Finni suddenly had the idea that his friends could stay over at his house. Sleepovers weren't very common in Finni's family. His parents worked a lot, and on weekends they wanted to relax and didn't want other children in the house. So it was that for the first nine years of his life, no one was allowed to stay overnight at Finni's house.

From 1989 onwards, this gradually changed, although it remained a very rare occurrence. Perhaps that's why Finni hadn't thought of it before. But now he couldn't get the idea out of his head. 

“Mom... can my friends come and stay over?” Finni asked hesitantly.

 “All three of them?” asked Elisabeth, and Finni could already tell from the question that the answer was “no.” 

“Well...,” Finni continued, “All three at once would be great. But if that's not possible... Then maybe one different one every weekend?” 

Elisabeth hesitated for a second, then said indifferently, “Fine by me.”
