Nozipho's Shebeen

The Irish word sibin migrated to South Africa, to refer to (originally illicit) taverns. Prior to 1961, every tavern in a "location" (black township) selling "white man's liquor" was illicit. Until 1994, many (probably most) shebeens remained unlicensed. Several shebeens are now essential stops for foreign tourists.

Shiza nyama (flamed meat) refers to meat grilled over open flame/coals . Most shiza nyama places allow patrons to choose and pay for raw meat, which is then grilled and served. Unlike braais enjoyed by more affluent people, shisa nyama traditionally makes the best use of tougher and more affordable (but more flavourful) cuts of forequarter, sliced into very thin chops which are then marinated to tenderise them.

The "ph" sound in Nozipho's name is pronounced as an exhaled "p" sound.
