“We may think that our skill lies in creating something out of nothing, but it is not so. Our years of training serve only to teach us how to recognise what lies beneath the surface.”

―Ann Swinfen, The Stonemason's Tale

“Michelangelo is quoted to have said: Every block of stone has a statue inside it and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it. He appears to be scrutinising the stone, visualising what lies within. When he carved David, he’s supposed to have said he just carved away everything that wasn’t David! This is how you’d look if you had a 17 foot block of marble to turn into a statue of David.”

So intense, yes, driven, yes, but also a visionary, imagining what’s already with that stone.
