When I was a toddler (mid 1960's), businesses sometimes used old decommissioned WW2 search lights to advertise a special sale, and circuses also used them to let folks know the show was in town. My toddler self was very scared of seeing these lights from my bedroom window, and my big brother helpfully told me "I think that's Martians, and they are coming to get us!" Good times...these lights are mostly gone now, but I remember them well. :)
