The tavern was darker than most this late at night. It sat on the edge of the waterfront, a place where the respectable dared not go. The fog from the docks clung to the crooked windows, warping the weak gaslight that tried, and failed, to brighten the place. Inside, the low hum of voices was punctuated by the clink of glasses, the scrape of chairs, and the occasional muffled laugh from the back rooms—rooms where business was done quietly, away from prying eyes.
John Sullivan pushed open the door, the hinges groaning in protest. Red Callahan followed closely behind, his presence as much a warning as it was protection. The tavern patrons glanced up for a moment, recognizing the man in the dark coat, then looked away, pretending not to see him. No one made eye contact for long. In these circles, it was a dangerous thing to look too long at John Sullivan.

He was leaning back in his chair, a half-empty glass of whiskey dangling loosely in one hand.
When Sullivan approached, Finn’s grin spread wide, though it didn’t reach his eyes. The man was all cocky bravado, but there was an edge of nervousness to his movements—a slight twitch in his jaw that he couldn’t quite hide. He wasn’t as comfortable as he wanted to appear.
