The sky was heavy, pressing low over the village of Bedburg like an iron lid trapping a slow-boiling fear. Clouds as dark as plague festered on the horizon, hiding the pale glow of the rising moon. It was a night of the full moon, a time when the villagers kept their doors locked tight and their prayers whispered low.
The children were still missing.
Four gone in less than two months. Each one vanished on a night like this, their bodies found later—mutilated, gnawed as though by some beast not born of this world. What remained of their bones had been scattered like straw in the forests outside the village, and none who had seen the grim remains had any doubts.
The Wolf was real.
