[The City That Grew Memories]
[“A City That Cultivates Memories” is a visual exploration of memory as a living ecosystem. I am fascinated by the idea that memories do not vanish without a trace, but continue to exist in space, influencing us like invisible organisms.
In this series, I present the city as a single living entity in which architecture and memory intertwine. Through the image of a researcher studying unknown life forms, I explore my own experience of presence, observation, and attempts to understand the nature of human experience. Each work becomes a new stage of discovery: from the first encounter with the unknown to the realization that the entire city is a vast archive of memory.
This story is dedicated not so much to the future or science fiction as to our inner world. I wanted to create a space in which memories are perceived as real entities—fragile, constantly changing, yet capable of forming entire worlds.
Chapter 1. The First Discovery
It all began with a crack in the old town square.
During a routine inspection, a researcher discovered an unknown organism breaking through the concrete. It resembled a plant, but it was not a plant. Its translucent tissues contained images of places that did not exist on the city map. This discovery became the first evidence of the existence of a new form of life—memory organisms.
Chapter 2. Cataloging the Species
The traces led the researcher to an abandoned public library.
Dozens of memory organisms were growing among the empty halls and ruined bookshelves. Each differed in form, structure, and content. Some held fragments of childhood memories; others, traces of long-vanished events. Thus began many years of work to classify this unknown species.
Chapter 3. Reaction to Presence
A discovery took place in an old subway station that changed the course of the research.
When the researcher approached the organisms, they began to glow softly. Their reaction was too complex to be a simple biological response. It seemed that the creatures not only sensed the human’s presence but also somehow recognized his memories.
Chapter 4. A Herbarium of Memories
Over time, a special archive was established.
The rarest specimens, collected from all over the city, were placed there. Inside some organisms, entire landscapes were discovered, along with the faces of unknown people and places that had long since vanished from reality. The research gradually ceased to be biological and became an exploration of the very nature of memory.
Chapter 5. The Source
The search led to the city center.
There, deep beneath layers of streets and buildings, a gigantic organism lay hidden, its roots permeating the entire infrastructure. Analysis revealed that it was the source of all memory organisms. The city turned out not to be their habitat, but part of a single living system.
Chapter 6. The Last Entry
The last photograph was taken from the roof of one of the high-rise buildings.
From this vantage point, the entire city looked like a huge living organism. A network of memory spread among the streets, squares, and buildings, connecting the past and the present. The researcher realized that memories never disappeared. They continued to live a life of their own, sprouting through time as naturally as plants sprout through stone.
The expedition had come to an end, but the main conclusion turned out to be simple: memory is not something stored within us. Perhaps it is we who live within it.]
