Story time. We used to crumple up paper and spray catnip on it, then throw it for the cat to chase. The longest straight distance in the tiny apartment was into the bathroom, and into the tub. It dawned on us that the cat would leap into the tub after it without knowing whether or not the tub was empty. Next time we needed to give kitty a bach, one of us took her outside while the other filled the tub. As soon as she got back, we did the catnip-paperwad thing, and sure enough... bloop. There were no cell phones in those days, otherwise I'd have video of a cat trying everything possible to change direction in mid-air.
