Yuko Shimizu

Yuko Shimizu (清水裕子, 1965) is a Japanese-born contemporary illustrator and teacher based in the USA. Her unique art style is a blend of traditional Japanese influences with modern design elements, creating a distinctive aesthetic that is both graphic and expressive. Her art style is visually striking and conceptually intense, with multiple layers and rich details. Shimizu’s work addresses a range of serious issues including sex, race, and cultural identity, but can also be light and whimsical. Shimizu’s work often focuses on exalting the Japanese culture through the use of primary colours and repetitive elements. Her illustrations are described as “a bit strange and dreamy” and she believes that her work reflects her own essence and thoughts.
