Echoes of Empire: Privilege in the Present:Papeete, Tahiti, French Polynesia

This image captures white Western retirees, digital nomads, and expatriates whose behaviors—ignoring local customs, asserting entitlement, or claiming legal and cultural immunity—reflect lingering colonial attitudes. Such actions are uniquely tied to the hierarchical legacy of European colonialism; while others might display similar attitudes, only white Westerners inherit systemic privilege that makes these behaviors socially and historically charged. Even if unintentional, their stance can appear patronizing or offensive, revealing a disconnect shaped by history and entrenched power.
