Even monsters have a past, and Lord Gairon is definitely a monster. He simply wasn't born as one. He neither knows nor cares how he got both his powers and his abnormally long life. His obsession with a singular vendetta will have devastating consequences both personally and globally.

+ Deliberately designing a villain with several neurological / psychiatric issues is a calculated risk since unrighteous stigma is already attached to psychiatric problems.

To be clear: Lord Gairon is evil despite having these issues -- not because of them. I'm treating his vampiric aspect as an addiction -- just a really creepy one.

+ It's memories about his mother's love & sacrifices that'll eventually aid in both his redemption and his destruction. It'll be his loyalty to, and respect for, a child that will motivate him to make an ultimate sacrifice. And that girl will become his unsung mother's greatest legacy.
