...are the result of purposeful breeding between Carpathian wolves and German shepherds. They have the body configuration and stamina of the wolf with the domestication traits of German shepherds. New DNA from wolves was discontinued in 1983 as the standard set was reached.
What a spectacular creature. I cannot comment on this particular cross/breed, but as much as I appreciate the appearance of such crosses in general, their behaviour and temperament is generally too unpredictable (even after many generations of line-breeding) for anything other than specialist working dogs. This isn't my personal view. It is the conclusion of a colleague (geneticist) who had spent half his career working on crossing GS dogs from several different strains with many different wolf species and subspecies. The SA Army wanted larger, tougher GS-type animals with sufficiently hairy feet to allow the dogs to work in hot desert / semi-desert conditions. The programme wasn't a great success.
