Franz Marc

Franz Marc (Franz Moritz Wilhelm Marc; 1880 – 1916) was a German painter and printmaker, and a key figure in the Expressionism movement, co-founding the art group Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), initially a journal whose name later became synonymous with the circle of artists collaborating in it. Marc's art is characterised by its bold use of colour, abstracted forms, and a deep connection to nature. He primarily used oil paints, often depicting animals in vibrant, symbolic colours to express spiritual and emotional themes. His works, such as Blue Horse I, reflect his belief in the purity of animals and nature, contrasting with the turmoil of human existence.
