Buddhism in India began in the 5th century BCE with Siddhartha Gautama attaining enlightenment at Bodh Gaya.

It grew through royal patronage and monastic universities. Buddhists believe in the Four Noble Truths, the path to end suffering, non-violence, compassion, and liberation from the cycle of rebirth.
