Good end to the chapter.

Minor thing on the image . . . would have been even better if he'd been looking the person in the eye while shaking hands

“I will pray for you and your husband,” Sister Helena replied. She put her hand over the woman. “Good and gracious God, thank you for this woman and her husband. I ask Your healing hand to be on this couple as they navigate turbulent times. Give them charity to deal with each other's viewpoints and learn the art of compromise. Most importantly, Father grant them love for each other, for that is what brought them together. I ask for the intercession of the Blessed Mother, Saint Joseph and Saints Louis and Zelie Martin. I ask this in the name of Your Son. Amen.”

“Thank you, Sister,” the woman said contently.

“You're welcome and I'll remember you and your husband in my prayers,” the Carmelite replied.

“God bless you.” the woman bowed her head and sister Helena returned to the gesture.
The team visited with the villagers for a good portion of the morning. As the church bells began rang out the midday hour, the villagers began to disperse.

Soon it was just Simon, Mary, and Maerwynn.

“Well, I'd say that was a success,” said Simon.

“Indeed,” said Bjornson in stoic voice. Larkin and Fairbairn gave each other a slight chuckle, knowing who the Norwegian was imitating.

Mary tugged at Simon's arm. “Darling, we have dinner with the Hendersons.”

“Duty calls,” Simon said. “Come along, Maerwynn.” Maerwynn gave Sister Helena a hug, then waved to the others, before darting to her parents with a shy giggle.

Bjornson gave a quiet chuckle. “Do you think we passed inspection?”

Fairbairn stretched, rolling her shoulders. “If not, they hide it well,” she replied.

Larkin’s gaze lingered on the remaining villagers, faces worn by time and hardship but softened by hope. “They let us in, he said quietly. That matters.”

Sister Helena glanced at the church, its spire catching a ray of light. “They opened their hearts,” she murmured. “Now we must guard them.”

For a long moment, none of them spoke.

Then, with its quiet sense of purpose, the team turned and made their way to the refectory—boots on the stone, with the thoughts of lunch and a new chapter to be written over a shared meal.

There was a reception in the village square. Tables were set up and Widow Palfrey and her friends made light refreshments and Messrs Kite and Henderson, the proprietors of the Black Labrador provided a cask of ale and wine each.

A line of villagers formed to meet the newcomers. Many shook hands with the team; A lot of women went up to Sister Helena asking for prayers.

“God bless you, Sir,” said one villager to Larkin.

“Will you pray for me and my husband, Sister?” One woman asked. “We aren't seeing eye to eye.”
