Part 1 / « La guerre n’a pas commencé le jour des premières attaques. Cette guerre-là doit bien remonter à la nuit des temps. A nos premiers souvenirs d’humains. Elle a toujours été là, sous notre nez, dans nos poings et dans nos armes. Dans notre rage et dans notre soif de pouvoir. Et pourtant, nous n’étions pas prêts. Quand il a fallut se battre pour de vrai, pour quelque chose d’important, d’essentiel, nous n’étions définitivement pas prêts. 

Je dis « nous »… En tout cas, moi, je n’étais pas prête. Je n’étais pas prête à abandonner ma maison, mon fiancé, mon travail et mes amis. Je n’étais pas prête à partir et à me cacher. Je ne savais pas me servir d’une arme. Ce qui est très simple, en réalité. On en fait toute une histoire et certains s’en font une gloire. Tirer avec un fusil ou un pistolet, rien de plus simple. Échapper aux incendies, voir à travers la fumée, économiser ses forces… Voilà des choses bien plus compliquées. 

Part 2 / Très vite les bêtes ont pris possession des villes, des métros, des sous-sols et de la surface. Elles négligeaient les hauteurs. La ville brûle et c’est un spectacle dont je ne m’ennuie pas. La petite équipe que je dirige, par la force des choses, m’a surnommée « Cassandra-Fire ». Parce que mes cheveux sont couleurs de flamme, je pense. Et parce que je n’ai pas peur du feu, aussi.

Les monstres, dehors, n’ont pas peur des flammes non plus. Ils ne brûlent pas et, au contraire, ils allument, je ne sais comment, les incendies avec passion. Peut-être avec amour. Curieusement, je comprends cet amour-là. Les bêtes ne sont pas si différentes de nous, peut-être ? Cette question occupe obsessionnellement mon esprit : ces monstres ne sont-ils pas, en fait, comme nous ?
