In Slavic mythology, both in the western and eastern traditions, there exists the concept of the "tutelary deiry" or simply the "spirit of the place". These mystical beings, unrelated to the gods, possess immense magical power and fulfill the role of Guardians or rulers of specific locations or areas. In the Slavic tradition, the names of such entities directly indicate their patronage: the Vodianoj (from the word "voda" - water) is the spirit-keeper of rivers and lakes, the Bolotnik (from the word "boloto" - a swamp) is the spirit-keeper of swamps and boglands, and the most renowned among them is the Leshy (from the word "les" - forest, woods), the spirit-keeper of forests and groves, the master of all woodland flora and fauna.

The Leshy is neither good nor evil. To those who abide by the rules of the forest and respect its Guardian, the Leshy will aid in finding the way home, appearing as a grouse, a beloved forest creature, or a kind and jolly old man. However, for those who violate its laws, hunting and felling trees without permission, a terrible fate awaits. It can lure a person deep into the heart of the forest, from which they would never escape, transform into a bear and punish the transgressor, or entrust its loyal servants, the entire animal kingdom of the forest, to deal with the trespasser.
