He is best known for his historical paintings of contemporary events and was a leading figure in the development of history painting in Britain. He helped to popularize the Neoclassical style. West was born in Springfield, Pennsylvania, and studied art in Italy and London. He was a successful portrait painter in New York City before moving to London in 1763. West's paintings are characterized by their use of dramatic lighting, emotional intensity, and realistic detail.
