Opal Prime is a genetically engineered descendant of Mudpuppy, alias "Opal Unit Zero."
After Mudpuppy's species went officially extinct, an obsessed supervillain spent centuries reconstructing and "improving" her species.
Opal Prime is a pre-mass-production prototype who inexplicably gained the superhuman ability to control her density -- a trait not passed on to the mass-produced models.
Like lungfish, the Opal Units can function amphibiously. They get marketed primarily to military and paramilitary markets.
