The Elf was kindly teaching the Troll the inner workings of the market. He was not stupid by any means, merely unacquainted with the customs and procedures of non-Troll culture.
His stomach did not understand or agree, but luckily that was -- mostly -- under his control.
In the end they walked away with enough pie to satisfy the three of them.
