The Faces of Grief

Grief has been the quiet architecture beneath much of the work I have created since joining NightCafe. Creating images has been a way to process a series of extreme losses and express my deep love, longing and despair for people, pets, and parts of me that are no longer here. The works hold the tension of the connection that still exists, the pain of what has been severed, and the loneliness that can come from grieving alone.
This sequence follows grief through the symbolic life of a bond with an animal companion: the trust that forms, the tenderness of care, the sadness of knowing that time is finite, the anguish of loss, the desperate wish to keep holding on, and finally the impossible act of release. The ending is not healing in any simple sense. It is the moment when love and connection remain, but the body is gone.
These works are deeply personal to me. When I look at them, I am not only seeing finished images; I am returned to the feeling I was trying to survive when I made them. In an instant, they can bring me back to tears.
Processing grief through AI image prompting also helped to give this grief a voice. Not only through the generated images that I could share with others, but through the actual words and vocabulary needed to express those emotions.
This body of work is not about resolution or a farewell to grief. It is about the architecture grief builds inside us: the rooms of memory, the weight of absence, the places where love still reaches for what is gone. It is a story I am still living, and one I made because I needed the grief to be seen.
