A hush fell over them as he spoke. "You do not know me. That is because I have been kept from you! Locked away! By a madman! My father, Ferlamund, whom all call the shadow king, for the illness of mind that plagues him. But I will be held in his shadow no longer!"

Baratoum leapt nimbly atop the dragons back. "This beast is an omen! Dark times are upon us! Times of death and flames, you see how they ravage our noble city. Join with me and protect our beloved kingdom. For now, let us put out fires, mourn our dead and rebuild. I will be with you in these great trials, I ask only for your loyalty!"

"Baratoum!" A citizen cried out, others followed and the chanting of his name became a thunderous din.

His breath caught when she walked into the hallowed chamber. She walked to the altar amidst the joyous laughter from Baldris quip. She stepped up beside him and her smile was like a beacon of Mahtma's light in the high afternoon sun, dazzling through the arched windows.

Agreppa Pthon stepped up, as newly appointed first knight of his household, and removed the white satin cloth covering their wedding bracers. She smiled wolfishly at them both as she set the box upon the altarpiece and stepped back to stand equidistant between the bride and groom.

Everyone awaited the arrival of Guniya Cress, to perform the ceremony. Hyresu's stern expression returned as he silently wished for her to arrive, but Aatush gently took his hand.

"This is it." She said. "I never thought I would be married."

"Nor I." He replied. "I snore, like a rusty saw blade."

She laughed lightly. "I know, love. I know."

Finally, the central doors opened, daylight blazing into the chamber. Guniya Cress had arrived.

"Mark the time. I may be unable to locate her, but I can find you, princeling. I imagine your location would be of interest to Almecca."

He barked a laugh. "I'm curious if you can, Empress. Let's find out. I'll speak to you again when your ominous deadline expires."

The mirror went opaque. Foleil placed her chin on her palm. After several moments, she spoke to her herald, Semeron Dain. "Send in Qowl. He is going to wake the dead for me."

Kamachrichthyon flew to the high plateau and set down. The imperial princess dismounted and walked into the quiet fortress.

The halls were ancient and dank, torchlight created pools in the stretching darkness. Finally she stood before him, lounging casually on a throne. She raised her chin and regarded him quietly.

Baratoum sneered. "Welcome, princess. Amourn Tor is an ancient stronghold, from long before Almecca was united, forgotten, by most. You'll find its accomodations less opulent than you're used to."

She stepped closer. "It needs a great deal of renovation, but the location is ideal, high vantages, only two points of approach, easily defended. Spacious enough to house a formidable host."

He was quiet a moment. "You are your mother's daughter, aren't you. Good. I've been raising a host, slowly, quietly. We must spin spiderwebs if we're to challenge Almecca. Let us discuss the future."

"And your name and lineage give me claim to yours, all the world could be ours." Artemisia trembled with desire as she spoke.

Baratoum regarded her quietly for long moments. Eerie eldritch light flickered across the chamber, the shadows dispersed. "I'm sending my mount for you, immediately. Make ready, my wife. Be on the summit of Mount Duloun."

The mirror darkened and fell clattering to the floor. Artemisia laughed in delight and returned it to the statue, then flew to her chambers.

They arrived at dawn, the gates were manned by half a dozen sentinels.

"I do not know the secret paths the rescue party has taken, but I think we can best aid them now by providing a distraction. So I say we go in the front doors." Mengara said, her jaw set with resolve, though her eyes were afraid.

Baldris laughed and dismounted. "I like it. This is just my kind of plan." He threw his cape clear of his sword and swaggered up to the sentinels. "Excuse me, gentlemen, but I think I'm lost. Is this the Rattlesnake Lounge in the Vale of Faluri?"

The guards reacted wordlessly, flanking him, one readying a net, another a pike, four with swords, but Baldris moved amongst them with brutal swift motion, cutting each down and then making sure every opponent was dead.

"Feels like the arena back home. Ladies, I believe we're invited in."

Lis snorted a laugh despite the gorey display. They went to the great doors and Lis muttered an incantation. They swung inward silently, to darkness.
