Life's Hard

“Life's Hard" is a darkly comedic existential short film that asks a simple question: What if the Grim Reaper isn't the villain we've made him out to be?
Told through a sardonic, deeply personal monologue, the film follows an exhausted Death reflecting on an eternity spent doing the most necessary job in existence while being universally feared, blamed, and hated for it. Humanity curses his name, treats him as the cause of every tragedy, and never stops to consider that he isn't the one making the fatal choices. He doesn't hand out cancer, encourage drunk driving, or create the countless reckless decisions that end lives. He simply arrives when those stories are already over.
Beneath the sharp humor is a profoundly lonely character. Death exists outside of life, forever watching but never belonging. He can't build friendships because everyone he meets eventually disappears. He can't defend himself because no one wants to listen. He carries out an endless responsibility that makes life itself possible, yet receives only fear and resentment in return. His existence is one of isolation, quiet depression, and the frustration of being blamed for an inevitability he neither created nor controls.
Visually, the film embraces a gritty neo-noir aesthetic built around tactile realism rather than supernatural spectacle. Smoke-filled dive bars, lonely highways, hospital rooms, and ordinary street corners become the backdrop for a mythological figure rendered startlingly human. His slumped posture, weary silence, and tired expressions speak louder than any horror imagery ever could.
At its heart, “Life's Hard" is about loneliness, accountability, and our complicated relationship with mortality. It invites the audience to see Death not as a monster, but as the last and most misunderstood worker in the universe—a patient witness who has spent eternity carrying out a thankless duty while humanity blames him for the choices, chance, and biology that define every life.
After all, Death isn't waiting because he wants you.
He's waiting because eventually, everyone arrives.
Like the people it portrays, "Life's Hard" isn't without its imperfections. A few rough edges remain, but they serve as a quiet reminder that flaws are part of every story, human or otherwise. Beneath them lies the film's true purpose: an empathetic portrait of the loneliest being in existence, forever burdened with a job no one appreciates and a reputation he never earned
