[Fire inside my mind]

[This is a deeply personal story that has shaped and permanently changed my life. At its core, it is a story about fear and hope. I chose to present it through a series of collage images, allowing a compact form of storytelling while still preserving a sense of openness and lightness.

It begins with what might be described as a “normal” life of a 32-year-old woman — friendships, work, and everyday hobbies.

Then something suddenly changes. Restlessness, confusion, and fear appear. Something is wrong, but I do not understand what it is.

In the hospital, extensive examinations are carried out, leading to the diagnosis of autoimmune encephalitis — a rare condition often accompanied by severe psychiatric and neurological symptoms. Nightmares, fear, and a complete loss of control over one’s own mind follow. Reality becomes distorted, memories fade, and even simple awareness of where I am or what is happening disappears. It feels as though my own thoughts no longer belong to me.

Gradually, treatment begins to take effect, and the long and intensive process of recovery starts. From being completely dependent on care, I slowly fight my way back into life. Hope becomes something I must hold on to consciously. I relearn how to speak, read, write, and calculate. I take my first steps again. I learn how to care for myself once more, climb stairs, and gradually find orientation in my surroundings.

Fifteen years later, I have found a new kind of stability. I am back in life, although not in the same way as before. Therapy and medication remain part of my everyday life. Much has changed — friendships, interests, and the absence of professional work have led to a complete new beginning.

Above all, I want to thank my family. They never left my side, they cared for me throughout the hardest moments, and they never gave up hope. I carry their love with me.
