The Colour of Despair

The Colour of Despair was created from a desire to explore grief not as something simple, sentimental, or quickly overcome, but as a force that can consume the way a person sees the world. The story begins with a man who has lost the person who gave his life colour. In response, he tries to make the world match his inner emptiness, covering every canvas in black as though darkness might protect him from memory.
But the piece is not only about despair. It is about the way the world sometimes reaches us when we can no longer reach for it ourselves. A storm, an accident, an open window — these become symbols of help arriving from outside the self. The ruined painting reveals that love has not vanished; it has only been hidden beneath pain.
I wanted to show that despair has a colour, but it is not the final colour. Grief may bury memory, joy, and beauty for a time, but it cannot destroy what was truly loved. The Colour of Despair is ultimately about the moment when darkness is broken open, and what remains underneath is not happiness, but acceptance.
