BE YOUR OWN KNIGHT

One quiet afternoon, Elara left her apartment and wandered into the woods beyond the city, hoping the silence might untangle the thoughts she could no longer carry.
Sunlight filtered through the trees as she rounded a bend.
Beneath an old oak stood a knight.
His silver armor was worn but dignified, a deep midnight-blue cape resting behind him. His face remained hidden beneath a closed helmet, and over his heart, engraved into the breastplate, was a single crescent moon.
Elara stopped.
Startled.
Curious.
She tried to catch a glimpse beneath his visor.
Before she could speak, the knight's calm voice broke the silence.
"Why do you carry so much weight alone?"
She frowned, caught off guard.
"...Do I know you?"
The knight gave no direct answer.
Instead, he simply stood there, patient and quiet, as though he'd been waiting for that question.
Elara blinked, startled but unafraid. “Because no one really sees me,” she replied softly. “They expect me to be strong, but I feel so small sometimes.”
He tilted his head slightly, the gleam of his armor catching the light. “You don’t have to carry it alone. Sometimes, being brave means letting someone stand with you—even if they remain a mystery.”
Their conversation drifted like the breeze through the trees, soft and easy, filled with words that began to heal parts of her she didn’t know were broken.
Their first conversation was cautious, filled with curiosity more than trust.
Yet when Elara finally returned home that evening, she found herself thinking about the mysterious stranger far more than she expected.
Days later, as dusk settled over the city, Elara looked out from her apartment window.
There, beneath her window, sat the knight.
Not calling for her.
Not demanding her attention.
Simply waiting.
Surprised, she opened the window.
"Why do you wait?" she asked.
His helmet tilted gently toward her.
"Because you are worth waiting for."
His answer warmed her more than she cared to admit.
That night, unable to quiet her thoughts, Elara sat curled on her couch with a book resting forgotten across her lap.
The pages lay upside down.
Her eyes were closed, though she wasn't asleep.
Outside, moonlight drifted through the open window while a black cat slept peacefully on the windowsill. She whispered into the quiet room,
"Maybe I imagined you..."
A gentle voice answered.
"That would make two of us."
Her eyes flew open.
There he was.
Kneeling respectfully beside the couch, one hand resting over the crescent engraved above his heart.
"...How long have you been there?" she asked.
"Long enough to decide interrupting your thoughts would have been rude."
Despite herself, she smiled.
"...You're impossible."
"I've heard worse."
From then on, the knight visited often.
Sometimes they spoke about fears.
Sometimes about the past.
Sometimes about nothing at all.
When she confessed how difficult it was to leave painful memories behind, he listened without judgment.
"The past can be a stubborn guest," he said. "But shadows only frighten us when we forget the light within ourselves."
"What if I'm too tired to keep fighting?"
"Then rest," he replied gently. "Even the strongest knights must rest. But don't stay there forever."
She laughed softly.
"What would you say just to make me laugh?"
He paused.
"Probably that dragons simply need hugs."
She laughed harder.
"And even knights have terrible hair days beneath their helmets."
The laughter surprised her.
It had been a long time since it had come so naturally.
The seasons quietly changed.
Spring blossoms gave way to summer sunlight.
Summer softened into golden autumn.
Autumn faded beneath winter snow.
With every passing season, Elara stood a little taller. Smiled a little more.
Spoke a little longer.
The knight remained the same—patient, constant, always listening.
He never walked the path for her.
He simply reminded her she was capable of walking it herself.
Then one evening...
He didn't come.
Elara waited by the window.
The black cat slept peacefully beside her.
The street below remained empty.
Night after night she waited.
Until one evening...
Far down the quiet street, beneath a lonely street lamp, she saw him standing.
Small.
Silent.
Waiting.
She ran.
Without thinking.
Without hesitation.
She reached him breathless.
"Where have you been?"
His voice remained as gentle as ever.
"You've learned so much, Elara."
"...It's time for me to leave."
Tears filled her eyes.
She stepped forward and wrapped her arms tightly around him.
For a long moment, neither of them spoke.
The wind whispered through the quiet street.
Her hand instinctively came to rest over the crescent engraved above his heart.
A warm light pulsed beneath her fingertips.
The Knight slowly faded into countless shimmering particles, carried away by the gentle wind.
Elara stood motionless.
Her trembling fingertips rested upon the little silver crescent on his breastplate, unwilling to let go of the final trace of the friend who had carried her through her darkest nights.
She looked into him one last time.
And he looked back.
Then...
he was gone.
Only the rain remained.
For a long moment, she stood in silence.
When she finally lowered her gaze, the little silver crescent rested quietly in the palm of her hand.
Its glow was soft.
Not blinding.
Not loud.
Simply...
warm.
She closed her fingers around it and took her first step forward.
The rain continued to fall as she walked away.
In the puddle beneath her feet, the Knight walked beside her one last time.
Not as a ghost.
Not as a farewell.
But as a silent reminder that the courage he had awakened within her would never leave her.
When she looked down again...
only her own reflection remained.
Yet somehow...
she no longer felt alone.
She smiled through quiet tears.
She no longer searched for someone to save her.
She had become her own knight.
Years passed.
Life continued, just as the Knight had always hoped it would.
Yet every now and then, whenever the world grew quiet, Elara found herself returning to the old oak tree.
Not because she was waiting for him to appear again...
But because it was there that she had first remembered how to believe in herself.
She would sit beneath its branches, the little silver crescent resting gently beside her, and smile—not with longing, but with gratitude.
Some places are not meant to hold our past.
They remind us how far we have come.
This is not a love story between a girl and a knight.
It is a story about hope appearing when life feels unbearable. About quiet companionship, unseen wounds, and the courage to keep walking when every step feels heavy.
The knight never came to carry her burdens. He came to remind her of something she had forgotten—that the bravest heart she would ever meet was her own.
This is not a story about defeating monsters. It is about living beside them without letting them become you. It is about the silent conversations we have with ourselves, the kindness we struggle to offer our own hearts, and the quiet courage of choosing tomorrow, one day at a time. Even in the darkest forest, there is always a path toward the light.
Perhaps every heart meets a knight at least once in a lifetime.
They may arrive as a parent, a teacher, a friend, or even a stranger whose kindness changes the course of our lives without them ever knowing it.
For the greatest act of love is not being saved by another... ...but learning to become your own knight.
They do not appear to rescue us forever.
They appear to remind us that hope still exists, that we are stronger than we believe, and that one day we will continue the journey on our own.
And perhaps...
the greatest way to honor the knight who once walked beside us... is to become one for someone else.
