A competition for AI storytellers

This is a story about what longing does to a person when it has nowhere to go. A king loses his queen. The throne beside him empties. So does he and with him, the kingdom. His subjects don't grieve with him. They grow impatient. They accuse him openly. He is a king who has forgotten how to reign. Then something shifts. Rather than surrender to the absence, he decides to answer it. He descends into his workshop and begins to build her piece by piece, in colored glass. His hands are the only thing he trusts now. He fails. He fails again. He doesn't sleep. He doesn't stop. Because longing, when it finds its shape, becomes obsession. And obsession, when it's born of love, becomes devotion. When she finally opens her eyes and takes her place on the throne, the court bows. Not out of duty but out of awe. They are watching what longing can make when a man refuses to let it hollow him out.

Longing is usually shown unmoving: A figure at the window, a letter that was never sent. This story shows longing as labor, moving. As something that burns through you until it either destroys you or creates something new. The glass is the key image: fragile, colorful, luminous when light passes through it. It's what love looks like when it's been broken and rebuilt by someone who refused to give up.
