Saving Hypatia

History sometimes feels like a series of windows that I’m looking through, into scenes where brilliant women were trapped, cornered, and silenced. When I think of these women, I’ve often been haunted by a singular impulse: the strong desire to reach back through the centuries and pull them out. So, when I thought of building a series for the NightCafe Select Challenge, my mind went to Hypatia. For several years I’ve been creating images of Hypatia finding her way to a worm-hole into a better future. But Hypatia always turns out very different from image to image and the scenes rendered don’t always match the fantasy I have in my mind. With all of the newest tools available (.g. GPT models, characters and templates *) I’ve finally been able to bring this series forth. And I am so excited. I hope you love it as much as I do. The visual sequence begins in the chaotic, sun-bleached streets of ancient Alexandria. Hypatia is running. She flees the temple with an angry mob in hot pursuit, stones gripped tightly in their hands. But history fractures here. As she runs, a violent storm erupts. The wind whips her robes, and a vortex of dark clouds swallows her, completely obscuring her from her captors. When the storm subsides, she falls to the earth. She looks up to find herself in Tucson, Arizona, in the year 2026. She did not arrive by accident. Neil and I drew her here. We built a digital beacon to pull her across time, hoping to bring her into a saner world where her mind could finally breathe. But sanctuary, like the modern world, is a complicated thing. The initial relief of her survival gives way to a heavy disillusionment. The twenty-first century is not the enlightened paradise that Hypatia deserved. We see Hypatia staring at modern screens, her face illuminated by the glare of broadcasts showing the destruction of Gaza. We watch her reading a newspaper, her analytical mind dissecting the authoritarian threats of Project 2025. Hypatia is at first tormented to see that the machinery of persecution has not gone away, it has simply upgraded its technology. But Hypatia was never meant to be a quiet refugee hiding away in an artist’s studio. Her grief transforms into a familiar fury. She recognizes the same old monsters under new names, and she refuses to run anymore. The final frames show her standing on the front lines of modern protests. I stand confidently next to her as she weaponizes her defiance, throwing rocks back at ICE. Saving Hypatia is a personal confession. It is an homage to the women who would not play nice, the women who deserved a better world - to the women who, if we could reach back in time and pull them forth, would stand beside us on the pavement, fighting.. It is also a reminder that education and power do not belong to the patriarchy, they are our birthright. *(super kudos to @Arkelon for the wonderful paper art template that helped make this series so amazing.)

The Architecture of Feeling

Pick a feeling - (wonder, longing, awe, the quiet kind of joy, it's up to you!) - and build a Body of Work that tells a story about it. Tell one story from start to finish, as a collection of images and/or videos, or as a single edited video. Think short film or mini exhibition, not a single image, clip, or mood board.

We want to feel it, not just see it.
