He noticed that the characteristics of pea plants followed familial lines, and that these characteristics could be manipulated through selective line-breeding.
The value of his work was recognised only after his death. This is a pity, as he was doing his research at about the same time Charles Darwin was formalising his thinking about "line-breeding" by natural selection.
One of the greatest contributions to the biological sciences was made with only a notebook, pen, garden tools and decades of patient dedication.
