Carla cradled the cardboard cake box Henry had given her as we'd set off to explore the winelands. Accompanying the words "Open in case of emergency" were doodles of wine glasses and two smiley faces. Very smiley faces. I was careful not to smirk. Similar boxes had supported me through more than one such predicament.
"I guess this qualifies."
The box contained five brown paper packets: two labelled "Thursday", two "Friday", and a large "Anytime before landing in the USA." It also contained a stack of serviettes, toothpicks and a floss dispenser.
She opened a 'Thursday', and placed the tiniest of mahogany slivers between her teeth before offering the packet to me.
"Mmm ... this is good." She picked out a few more slices. "I wasn't sure what to expect," she said between further dips into the packet. "I love the squishiness. It's delicious." It was a safe bet the fifth packet wouldn't see Cape Town again.
