"Gloria all'Egitto, ad Iside / Che il sacro suol protegge / Al Re che il Delta regge / Inni festosi alziam!" ("Glory to Egypt, to Isis / Who the sacred soil protects / To the King who the Delta holds / Festive hymns let us lift!")
The opera "Aida" by Giuseppe Verdi was composed between 1870 and 1871, and it was premiered on December 24, 1871, at the Khedival Opera House in Cairo, Egypt. It was commissioned by the Khedive of Egypt, Isma'il Pasha, to celebrate the opening of the Suez Canal. The opera is set in ancient Egypt and tells the tragic story of the love between the Ethiopian Princess Aida and the Egyptian warrior Radames.
It's famous for its spectacular scenes, often requiring the presence of real elephants on stage.
