Maria Sibylla Merian

Maria Sibylla Merian (1647 – 1717) was a German naturalist and scientific illustrator who later became a Dutch citizen. Renowned for her pioneering studies on the metamorphosis of butterflies, Merian was among the first to document insect development stages with scientific rigour and artistic flair. She primarily worked with watercolours and engravings, producing detailed illustrations that beautifully combined scientific accuracy with artistic elegance. Her contributions were crucial in the early development of entomology, particularly through her observations made during her expedition to the former Dutch colony of Suriname. Merian’s works not only advanced scientific understanding but also demonstrated the intricate relationship between art and science during the Baroque period. Her legacy is reflected in her detailed depictions of the flora and fauna of Suriname, highlighting both the diversity of nature and the meticulousness of her scientific inquiry.
