Plague and famine strike the masses dead –

He'll outride Death's hooved tread.

The raucous masquerade is underway,
Guests dance as wine flows freely down,
The hearth glows hot in crimson gown,
While carriages line up in proud array!

Bengal lights crackle through the night,
The reveling crowds cry out in glee...
Let endless be this revelry –
Let it be just like they delight!

The wind howls, the clock chimes loud,
Midnight's veil has just unfurled,
When beneath the hall's high vaulted world
A shadow emerges from the shroud.

A crimson mask conceals their face,
Shrouded in a winding sheet,
The prince's guests and retinue elite
Fall silent in that solemn moment.

The raucous masquerade has ceased, 
The wines all spilled upon the floor, 
Decay and cobwebs reign forevermore, 
The revelers now numbered with the deceased! 

The candles snuffed, the fires dead, 
None drink or make their revels bright, 
Only Red Death's imperial ghostly light 
Waltzes on shadowed night's soft tread...
