In the depths of East Slavic folklore lurks a creature of nightmare: the cat Bayun. A monstrous feline of enormous size, Bayun is said to feast on human flesh. But it is not his sharp claws and teeth that make him truly fearsome - it is his voice. Bayun's purring can be heard from seven miles away, and those who hear it are doomed to fall into an enchanted slumber, indistinguishable from death itself.

Legend has it that Bayun sits atop a towering black iron pillar, reminiscent of the idols worshipped by ancient Slavic pagans. He resides "за Тридевять земель" - 39 lands away (that's how in russian fairy tales was called unexplored lands far far away) in a gloomy black forest where there is no living being left.

But for those brave enough to face the horrors of Bayun's lair, there is a glimmer of hope. It is said that whoever captures the cat will be granted immunity from all diseases and ailments, thanks to the healing power of Bayun's purring. But beware: the line between salvation and death is perilously thin, and only the strongest and most cunning can hope to survive the encounter.

The name "Bayun" itself is steeped in darkness and mystery. Derived from the word for "talker" or "storyteller," it hints at the cat's ability to weave enchantments with his voice. And yet, the verb "убаюкивать" - to lull - suggests a more sinister meaning

Bayun, the giant cat of the dark wood,
With a heart of stone, he was no good.
With a purr so sweet, he lured his prey,
Into a deep slumber, where they'd stay.

He'd pounce with speed, and devour with glee,
Leaving no trace, for others to see.
But Bayun had a secret, little known,
Cage or trap, his power would be gone.

For his purr held magic, to heal and mend,
Any wound or disease, it could transcend.
But Bayun was selfish, and loathed to use it right,
Only for himself, would he ever permit.

So beware the cat, with purr so sweet,
Evil intentions, he'll never defeat.
Catch him, power seize, use it with care,
Or Bayun's spell of death will ensnare.
