The roar of gunfire had come out of nowhere, the Russians moving through the mist like shadows, silent and deadly. And in the chaos, they had taken Patrick. Sullivan had watched as the boy was dragged into the fog, kicking and shouting, his face pale with terror. It had happened too fast. Too fast.

Sullivan stood now at the edge of the dock, his jaw clenched tight, the cold wind biting through his coat. Red was beside him, silent, his face a mask of barely contained fury. The rest of the crew was spread out, preparing for what was coming. This wasn’t just another skirmish. This was war.

“We’re outnumbered,” Red said quietly, though his voice held no fear.

Sullivan took a deep breath, his eyes scanning the dockyard. “Not for long.”

The low rumble of engines echoed through the mist, and moments later, two dark shapes emerged from the fog—cars. They came to a halt near the entrance to the dock, and from the lead car, Marshal Frank Donovan stepped out, his long coat flaring as he moved. He wasn’t alone—behind him, a dozen U.S. Marshals followed, each armed with rifles that gleamed in the low light.

“Hell of a mess you’ve gotten us into, Sullivan,” Donovan said, his voice grim but calm.

Sullivan nodded, his face unreadable. “We’re past that now. Volkov’s men are coming. We don’t stop them tonight, none of us walk out of here.”

Donovan’s jaw tightened, and he nodded to his men, who moved quickly into position. The Marshals took cover behind crates and barrels, their rifles raised, scanning the fog for movement.

Red glanced at Sullivan. “You think they’ll actually fight for us?”

Sullivan didn’t answer immediately, his eyes still on the mist. “They’ll fight for themselves. Volkov’s a threat to them, too.”

The sound of boots crunching on gravel cut through the silence, and Sullivan turned his head to see another figure approaching—Tommy Mulligan, the young runner who had been a part of Sullivan’s operation for years. The kid’s face was pale, his hands shaking as he handed Sullivan a note.

“They’re coming, boss,” Tommy whispered, his voice trembling. “Big force. Russians, and lots of ‘em.”

Sullivan crushed the note in his fist and looked at Red. “Get the men ready. This is it.”

The docks were eerily quiet, the thick mist rolling in from the Hudson River swirling around the stacked crates and abandoned warehouses. The usual hum of activity had disappeared, leaving only the sound of lapping water and the distant cries of seabirds.

But Sullivan felt it in the air—the calm before the storm.

Maeve had stood beside him not twenty minutes ago, her sharp eyes scanning the foggy streets like she always did. She had that half-smile on her lips, the one that always made Sullivan think she knew something he didn’t. Now, she was gone—her body lying in the shadows of the warehouse, the blood already soaked into the wooden floor.

She had taken the bullet meant for him.
