Thank you! A Great Question!! Commas are counted as 'tokens' or words when seen in a Prompt. We are currently allowed only 60 tokens in a valid Prompt. SD completely ignores the commas and periods when reading the Prompt in terms of meaning (it does however count them and decrement from your allotment). If you HAVE to have the commas to help you write, you will be able to enter fewer words in the Prompt.
There is a meme out there that says that commas enhance the Prompt, change it materially. 
I don't think so.
HOWEVER!!: adding an emoji (I usually insert one before the first word) WILL noticeably affect the  Outcome of the Prompt. Different emoji give different results.
The '&' character (the only one I have bothered to test) also has a net effect.
Best thing is to play! Burn to Learn - if you are organized about it...

wow david, thank you so much for this very thoughtful and detailed explanation! i am extremely detail oriented and systematic despite the surrealist bent that i forge in a lot of my output (( ahh neurodivergence, ye treat me so well )) so i am always seeking to understand more about whatever i can, especially that which is so obtuse and experimental to begin with. and unfortunately there seems to be a high level of closed doors in the AI-art community—though Nightcafe has been nothing but a lovely experience—and while i understand that a lot of people have their techniques they’d like to keep to themselves, this is a weird new world of experimentation and we’re all just nudging a rather temperamental machine with questions and exclamations to see what it spits or drools out. i really appreciate yr insight and openness. best, sade.
